Project IGI 1 Full Review: Story, Game play, Graphics & More

It has been really interesting for me to install Project IGI 1 on my PC that did not possess very good hardware and had little space for the installation of games. At that time, all action games were based on running and shooting, but there was something else about this game that made it different from others. To pass the levels, one needed to be patient and thoughtful, and he had to slow down to observe and think.

In the current times, people have become used to games such as Call of Duty, Battlefield or GTA with excellent graphics and great control. But when one tries to play Project IGI: I'm Going In, he realizes why this game is so popular among many PC gamer. It is not because of its graphics but because of unique game play and the feeling of success achieved after numerous unsuccessful attempts.

I have been playing this game for a rather long period of time, and thus I can state that Project IGI 1 offers gamer a unique experience of gaming.

What is Project IGI?

Project IGI (I’m Going In) came out in 2000 by Innerloop Studios with publishing from Eidos Interactive. The game features a player controlling David Jones, a former SAS soldier and secret agent.

While in other shooting video games the goal is to run straight to enemies, in Project IGI, you need to make plans for your actions using binoculars, taking note of the enemy positions and managing ammunition and the time of attack.

This game gained popularity because it brought about a sense of realism of the military environment.

Story and Missions Experience

The story of Project IGI 1 is simple yet efficient. You become David Jones who takes part in missions related to military weapon and facilities and intelligence activities.

Your missions will be:

Entering enemy facilities

Taking valuable documents

Destructing military equipment

Liberating detained agents

Removing enemy threats

The story of the game is not told through lengthy cinematics characteristic for today's games. Mission descriptions give you the goals for each mission prior to its start.

I realized while playing that the absence of narration made the gameplay better. Your attention remains focused on the mission itself without viewing lengthy cut-scenes.

One of the first things I understood in the game was that charging in the enemy facilities was absolutely wrong. My first tries were disastrous as I tried to complete it as usual action game. After I changed my tactics the missions became much easier.

Project IGI 1 Gameplay Review

Gameplay is one of the strong points of Project IGI 1.

The game features:

First-person shooting

Stealth

Tactics

Exploring military locations

You will be dropped into open outdoor locations in order to accomplish certain missions. You will need to deal with enemies, guards, watchtowers, vehicles, and security systems that protect the location.

Stealth Approach

The most exciting part of the game is stealth approach.

Prior to the attack, you can:

Spot the enemies using binoculars

Observe patrol movements

Hug the buildings and trees

Kill the enemies quietly

Once, I spent several minutes just observing the patrol movements of enemies prior to taking action. This slowed me down, but once the mission was accomplished without any alarms, the feeling was very rewarding.

Weapons and Combat

There are numerous types of weapons in Project IGI:

Assault rifles

Sniper rifles

Pistols

Machine guns

Grenades

One of the most exciting weapons is sniper rifle. It gives great satisfaction to find a nice position and kill enemies from afar.

Nevertheless, the shooting mechanics feel quite outdated for the modern gaming industry. The aim system feels clunky compared to modern shooters.

Is the difficulty easy or hard?

IGI Project 1 is considered a difficult video game.

There are no saving mechanisms at all during the missions that are quite annoying. In case you make a mistake in the final moments of the mission, you will have to start from scratch.

At first, I thought it was irritating. Several times, I had to repeat a mission because I acted hastily and did not notice the presence of enemies.

However, eventually, I found out that this difficulty made the game fun because it taught me to:

Be patient

Think twice

Remember the enemy's behavior

Develop strategies

For modern gamers who get used to having automatic saving points in games, it might be a bit challenging.

Graphics and Visuals

Considering the year 2000, the graphics in Project IGI were quite remarkable.

Project IGI contains:

Landscape locations

Weather conditions

Military bases

Weapons

Day/Night missions

Obviously, the graphics in the game look dated when compared with current computer games. Character models are basic, textures have low resolution, and the animation is scarce.

However, upon my replay on PC, the atmosphere surprised me with how well it works. Snow-covered mountains, forests, and enemy bases create an authentic military atmosphere.

More attention to environment rather than flashy graphics made this game age well.

Sound and Music Effects

Sound effects play a significant role in Project IGI.

Game includes:

Gun fire

Helicopters' noises

Enemy communication

Explosion sounds

Military ambiance sounds

The sound effects increase the tension in the game, especially during stealth missions.

Wandering through the enemy base while listening to guards talking creates an atmosphere of danger. It feels like one wrong step will give you away.

IGI 1 PC System Requirements

The reason why this game gained so much popularity is that it worked well with many computers.

System Requirements:

OS: Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP

Processor: Pentium II 300 MHz

Memory: 64 MB

Graphics Card: 8 MB 3D graphics card

Modern PC:

Today, virtually every basic computer is able to work with this game.

A basic modern PC with:

Intel core i3/i5 processor

4 GB RAM

Common Errors that Players Do in Project IGI 1

1. Playing like Call of Duty

This is the greatest error.

Project IGI was not meant for rushing and shooting anywhere.

Proper tactic:

Observing the enemies first

Planning the path

Attacking strategically

2. Ignoring the Map

The map is very helpful.

Most players tend to ignore the locations of enemies and run straight into hazardous zones.

3. Consuming Bullets

Bullets are scarce, particularly on longer operations.

Players need to try and shoot precisely rather than shooting constantly.

4. Not using the Sniper Rifle

Use of the sniper rifle makes many tasks easy for the player.

Taking a proper stance can aid the player in eliminating the enemy zones.

What Sets Project IGI 1 Apart?

No matter how many years have passed since then, Project IGI still stands out for offering something that many contemporary titles lack the sense of fragility.

You are no Superman, who can do anything. You are an operative behind enemy lines.

Every assignment is dangerous.

In Project IGI, it’s all about being clever rather than quick.

That’s the reason why many gamers still recall Project IGI as one of the best tactical shooters in PC gaming history.

Is Project IGI 1 Worth Playing?

Yes, indeed, Project IGI 1 is worth playing since the player can enjoy the game even though it has an outdated set of features. Even though the game appears outdated compared to modern FPS games, some things like intelligent mission planning, stealth gameplay, and realistic atmosphere make the game enjoyable. Patience is one of the qualities that one should have while playing the game since it is impossible to act hastily. On the contrary, one has to analyze the environment and perform actions wisely. Project IGI 1 will be a good choice for people who like outdated PC games and complex missions. At the same time, people who prefer contemporary games with contemporary graphics and fast action might find it dull.
